Position Summary:
The WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Clerk is a key staff member for front office operation. The
WIC clerk provides the first impression of the clinic to the client. Responsibilities include collecting
demographic information, determining income eligibility, scheduling WIC appointments, issuing
food benefits and reviewing WIC client rights and responsibilities with WIC participants.

What You'll Do:
  • Maintain general appearance of the waiting room (Columbus and satellite clinic sites) and work
  • station ensuring that it is clean throughout the day.
  • Effectively answers the telephone, routes phone calls correctly, and returns phone calls in a
  • timely manner.
  • Provide excellent customer service in a courteous, polite, and helpful manner.
  • Accurately completes certification process according to WIC procedures.
  • Effectively uses the computer scheduler for making WIC appointments.
  • Accurately issues monthly WIC benefits.
  • Effectively educates participants on proper use of WIC food List and eWIC card.
  • Completes reminder calls and texts daily for previously made appointments as well as
  • for missed appointments, and records reminders on WIC share drive.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of HIPAA standards in practice and document
  • management.
  • Interprets information for the Certified Professional Authority (nurse and/or dietitian).
  • Performs other tasks within WIC Clinic as needed and as time permits.
  • Attends Staff Meetings.
  • Reports for duty promptly at the start of the shift, calls in if absent at least one hour before the shift and speaks to coordinator, director, or office manager.
Qualifications:
  • High School graduate is required. Some post high school training is desirable.
  • Previous experience working with the public is helpful. Staff hired for the position will need to attend training in Lincoln for more than one day.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred. Knowledge of breastfeeding is desirable. Work experience with WIC is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • May require sitting for long periods of time. Some bending, lifting, stooping and stretching required.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to operate office equipment such as computer keyboard, photocopier, telephone and calculator.
  • Some lifting may be involved, up to 35 pounds.
General Requirements:
  • Valid Nebraska driver's license with at least 100,000/300,000 liability insurance maintained and paid for by employee on personal vehicle if employee plans to seek reimbursement for travel. Insurance declaration for proof is required before travel or mileage reimbursement. 
  • Participates in Public Health Emergency Response Training and pre-assigned to a response team.
  • Attends community, department and state meetings, training sessions, seminars, workshops etc. for professional development.
  • Utilize health literacy skills to provide clear, concise information to clients.
